Youth As Leaders Adults as Mentors
The TOC Youth leadership programs teach immigrant and refugee students leadership skills. We model competence, confidence, and commitment to becoming a leader. These programs reinforce cultural identity in a positive way. Our youth experience encouragement in cultural pride.
The following skills: Leadership, Initiative, Creativity, Responsibility, Confidence, and Public speaking are promoted during meetings and activities.
Minority youth are taught to become volunteers and & do community outreach.
We have helped hundreds of students and their families over the years.

Translators of Cultures Youth Initiative
Translators of Cultures Youth leaders are launching a 7 session workshop about becoming community leaders. This workshop includes building community connections. We are inviting Sioux Falls community leaders to be presenters at this class.
Through this Youth Initiative, TOC leaders want to explore the following areas:
- What is a roadmap for our youth to become leaders and achieve success?
- How to set up life goals as well as professional goals?
- How to find the right mentor?
- How to learn resiliency and to face and overcome challenges/failures?
- Learn about leadership styles from successful leaders of our community.
- Compare the American leadership models with styles and variations from around the world.
- Create a dialogue and get to know each other.
- Have Fun.

AMMY
Research has shown that a question as simple as, “How was your day at school?” when asked by a parent or an adult on a regular basis, improves a child’s performance in school. Positive attention decreases the likelihood of a child to drop out. Regular positive interactions with adults build self-esteem and confidence in youth.
The success of our peer tutoring inspired us to create an adult mentorship program. AMMY (Adults Mentoring Minority Youth) was born to provide for this need.
The AMMY program has twenty participants, both youth and adults. Our adult mentors are community volunteers who visit with minority high school students during the students’ lunch period.
